Happy 30th Anniversary to the Australian Flyball Association!

While flyball activities were taking place in Australia before 13 October 1996, it was on this day that a group of people with a shared passion for flyball came together “on a sunny afternoon at the Queanbeyan Bowling Club” to establish the Australian Flyball Association (AFA) as we know it today.

Thirty years on, the AFA continues to grow, with an ever-increasing membership and flyball activities bringing together dogs, handlers, clubs and supporters from across Australia. Reaching this significant milestone is a testament to the dedication, enthusiasm and commitment of our members, past and present.

Our founding members should be proud to see their vision realised and continuing to flourish. Their dream has developed into a thriving association that has helped shape the sport of flyball in Australia. Remarkably, we still have ten members who joined the AFA in its first year, some of whom remain actively involved today.

This 30th anniversary belongs to all of us — our founding members, our long-standing and current members, our dogs and everyone who has supported the AFA along the way. Each has played a part in making the association what it is today.

In 2019, founding member Steve Pitt reflected on the sport's journey:

“Flyball racing is a galaxy away from where it all began and the future will present endless opportunities for the sport of flyball racing to grow, can’t wait for the next chapter in the growth of this wonderful sport that will enhance the lives on many thousands of dogs and handlers into the future.”

Those words were relevant then, and they remain just as relevant today. As we look back on 30 years of achievement, we can also look forward with excitement to the opportunities, friendships and adventures that lie ahead for flyball in Australia.

To celebrate this remarkable milestone, over the next 30 days we will share stories, historical highlights, and fun and quirky facts that reflect the history, people and moments that have made the AFA what it is today.

So, whether you have been part of the journey for 30 years or have only recently joined our flyball family, we invite you to celebrate this special occasion with us.

Race hard. Have fun. And here's to the next chapter!

Happy 30th Anniversary to the Australian Flyball Association — and a special congratulations to our 30-year members!
